THE PANCREAS
There are two main purposes of the very fragile pancreas:
1) EXOCRINE – this means that the pancreas sends out digestive fluid into the duodenum (which is the C-shaped red tube that it is nestled inside of in the picture)
2) ENDOCRINE – this means that the pancreas releases insulin and glucagon into the blood
As I mentioned the pancreas is supposed to sit inside the “C” of the duodenum. Right at the center point there is a sphincter called The Sphincter of Oddi. It is through this little hole that the exocrine fluids are released. Sometimes the duodenum and pancreas can be out of sync and the pancreas will not be nestled inside of the duodenum. When this happens you don’t feel that great. Additionally if the tail of the pancreas is not moving (remember, “Lack of movement causes pain”) the person will feel profoundly ill.
The tail of the pancreas in on the right side of the picture. The tail bumps into the spleen. This articulation is very important.
Using gentle visceral manipulation techniques can help with issues of the pancreas. Remind yourself that by using visceral manipulation you are just seeking to ‘wake up a little something’. The need for visceral manipulation does not indicate a problem with an organ, but rather the techniques are simply a way to give the organ a boost, helping to facilitate better and correct mobility and motility.
The pancreas is known to be affected by social stressors, unaccepted deaths, and an unsatisfying life.
This video by William Davis, MD about HbA1c has a surprising correlation to your pancreas.
Did you know…?
over 90% of euro-musculoskeletal dysfunction has a visceral component to them…that’s 9 out of 10! The goal of visceral manipulation is to harmonize and to re-establish the proprioceptive communication in the body in order to improve its functioning
THE SPLEEN
The spleen is a soft vascular organ that lies against the diaphragm between the 9th and 11th ribs. It is considered a secondary lymphoid organs and plays an important role in the immune system. It also helps the body to assimilate iron. The spleen starts our small and increases in size as one grows and then by about age 70 it has lost 25-35% of its total weight.
ROLES OF THE SPLEEN
1) Filters blood
2) Removes iron form hemoglobin
3) Produces lymphocytes and antibodies
4) Stores and releases blood with high concentration of corpuscles
The spleen has been associated with deep pessimism/sadness, deep sorrow or remorse, and a crushed or stolen childhood.
Encouraging the spleen and keeping it moving in proper physiological mobility and motility is what gentle visceral manipulation is all about. Adding in visceral manipulation to your treatment is always an option. Additionally, having a full session of VM is also possible. Bring your questions. Let’s talk about it!

Visceral Manipulation is a manual therapy consisting of gentle, specifically placed forces that encourage normal mobility, tone and inherent motion of the viscera, their connective tissue and other areas of the body where physiologic motion has been impaired.
